Why did I lose my English-Chinese dictionary after updating iCED - ABC Edition?

E-mail Print PDF

Please be reassured that you haven't lost any functionality or dictionaries since the previous version. If you no longer have a dictionary that you had in the previous version, something may have gone wrong or not completed during the initial setup.

The iCED software is now published on the App Store without dictionaries (see this article for more information). You need to install the dictionaries that you want.

Note: The initial cost of the ABC Edition has always included the licensed ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary and NOT the ABC English-Chinese Dictionary. This is because we only had one dictionary licensed from the publisher when we first made iCED available. The English-Chinese counterpart was still under development back then. We later added it on as an in-app purchase. It has always been this way.

However, full-text searching of the ABC Chinese-English Dictionary has always been available so that you could search by English words.

The CC-CEDICT Chinese-English Dictionary is also available as a free download and includes an English index which makes it very close to an English-Chinese Dictionary. Here is what is available to you at no extra cost, included with the purchase of iCED Chinese Dictionary - ABC Edition, since version 2.

  1. ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary (which includes full-text searching using English words)
  2. CC-CEDICT Chinese-English Dictionary (which includes full-text searching using English words)
  3. CC-CEDICT English Index - which allows you to look up English words in the form of a word list
  4. CDICT5 English-Chinese Dictionary (for advanced learners and Chinese native speakers)
  5. Unihan Character Dictionary
If you are missing any of these dictionaries, would like to use it, but cannot figure out how to restore it, please contact our customer support.

Why do I now have to download dictionaries separately after updating iCED?

E-mail Print PDF

Prior to version 3.0, iCED was published on the App Store bundled with several dictionaries. This meant having to endure a 300+ MB download each time there was an update to the app which meant that it had to be done over wi-fi. While it was possible to download these large app packages directly to your device over wi-fi, it was not always convenient since the device could keep turning off and would sometimes cause problems on the device. Once started, it was not very easy, if even possible, to abort the download. We suggested in the past that you download iCED updates via your desktop iTunes and then sync to your device.

Starting with version 3.0, we've separated the application program from the dictionary data. The dictionaries are now stored in a different area than the app. It is now possible to quickly and easily update iCED directly on your device even over 3G, since the size of the app is now only about 13 MB. The very first time you've installed iCED 3.0, you'll also need to download and restore your dictionaries. This may take some time but once they have been installed, future app updates will only take a few minutes because you won't have to re-install the dictionaries each time.

Here are some other advantages of the app-data separation:

  1. Syncing and backing up your device with iTunes on the desktop is faster. The large dictionaries are not part of the sync/backup process.
  2. You only need to install dictionaries that you use and delete dictionaries that you no longer wish to use.
  3. Dictionaries can be updated by Murage without having to submit a new version of iCED to Apple. They will show up as dictionary updates in iCED and you can update at your convenience.
  4. New dictionaries can be added to the in-app catalogue without having to submit a new version of iCED to Apple.

I purchased an ABC dictionary, but it did not download. What do I do?

E-mail Print PDF

If you've purchased an ABC dictionary via an in-app purchase, i.e. via the on-line catalogue that is accessed from within the app, but the download of the dictionary does not start, do the following:

  1. In iCED, go to Settings/Add-ons.
  2. Make sure you are logged in.
  3. Use the Restore option; your download should commence.

Why am I not able to download dictionaries in the background?

E-mail Print PDF

UPDATE: The current version of iCED is able to download dictionaries in the background. However, if your device goes to sleep and the data connection is cut off, this will stop your download. Downloads are NOT resumable so you'll have to start over. The reason for this is because we use the WebDAV protocol to download the dictionaries and our current host provider does not support WebDAV resume, even though iCED does. The next update to iCED will use FTP to download the dictionaries and will have resume capability.

OUR CURRENT RECOMMENDATION IS TO NOT RELY ON BACKGROUND DOWNLOADING.

We are currently working to fix this issue for iOS 4 users. The update should be out shortly. In the meantime, you'll need to keep iCED running in the foreground. When dictionaries are being downloaded, the device should stay on. Please check the Downloads tab to monitor the progress of your downloads.

After updating iCED how do I get my ABC dictionaries back?

E-mail Print PDF

Restoring ABC Dictionaries after updating to version 3.0

When you first update to version 3.0 you will be presented with the Setup Assistant. If you purchased the ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary or the ABC English-Chinese Dictionary, the Setup Assistant will help you restore your dictionaries.

After you have completed the Setup Assistant, go to the Settings tab and Select Manage Dictionaries to verify that your purchased dictionaries have been restored. If not, go back one screen and select Add-ons, make sure you are logged in and then select the Restore option.

To get other dictionaries, such as CC-CEDICT, select Available Add-ons, select the Free tab, find the dictionaries you want and download. For more information on this, see the FAQ article How do I restore all my dictionaries?
