iCED iPad and iOS 4 Compatibility

E-mail Print PDF

We know you've all been waiting patiently. With all the updates from Apple, we've been working hard to bring you both iPad and iOS 4 compatibility. We're almost there and will give you details on the update when the final build has been submitted to Apple.

We are aware that the "Radical Index" button does not currently work under iOS 4 and this will be fixed in the next update.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! iCED Pro 1.5.3 has been released to correct a bug related to the radical-index tab. This is the last version that supports iPhone OS 2. iCED 2.0 will require iPhone OS 3.

(iCED version 2.0 should be release within a week!)

2009-11-21

We're still working hard to bring you version 2.0. We're preparing a beta version for our beta testers and trying to wrap up some loose ends.

2009-10-19

Version 1.5.1 is now available. This is a maintenance release.

  • Fixed bug that would cause certain Chinese characters entered in the search field to not perform the search, making it appear that the word did not exist in the dictionary.
  • Fixed the HTML header of exported word lists to denote that the text is UTF-8 so that e-mail clients can interpret the text correctly.
  • Fixed bug that would intermittently cause no data to load even though it says "Loading additional data..." for compound or component entries.
  • Fixed bug that would intermittently cause some cells to stay blank.

Version 1.5

  • iCED Free users now have word lists too but will be limited to creating up to 4 word lists.
  • Back up your word lists to MobileMe or another WebDAV account.
  • Scrolling the search results list automatically closes the keyboard.
  • Changed font used in some places for Chinese characters so that the style is more modern. For example, 半, when it appears as part of another character, would sometimes have the first two strokes forming a ^ shape; it will now have a v shape.

What's coming?

Here's what's planned for the upcoming Version 2 of the software.

  1. Completely redesigned integrated search tab (to replace the Chinese, English, Radicals tabs) which will allow searching of multiple dictionaries, bi-directional (Chinese<->English) searching, and radical index.
  2. Redesigned radical index input method.
  3. Search will always show nearest entry to what is typed and will allow browsing adjacent entries. This will help if you are not sure of the exact pinyin spelling or Chinese characters.
  4. Multiple dictionaries: ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary, CC-CEDICT, Unihan character dictionary and the option to purchase "in app" the ABC English-Chinese Dictionary.
  5. Flash cards training.
  6. Toolbars for more "on screen" functionality so that more functions are just one tap away.
We also hope to get other features in there, either for 2.0 or a later update:
  1. Details on characters, such as radical, stroke-count, components, etc.
  2. Stroke order diagrams
  3. Audio pronunciation (add-on)
  4. Character etymology and ancient script versions (add-on)
  5. Other dictionaries (to be decided based on user feedback, licensing, etc.)

All suggestions are welcome and are taken into consideration for possible future enhancements.

NOTE: iCED Pro is being offered at an introductory cost while we prepare version 2 of the software. The cost will increase when version 2 is available for sale. Current version 1.x owners will be able to download the update for free, but some additional dictionaries will require an "in app" purchase, such as the ABC English-Chinese Dictionary.

iCED version 2.0 is available in the App Store. You iPhone or iPod touch must be running iPhone OS 3.1.2 or later.

New names

With the ability to purchase features and dictionaries in-app, all three versions of iCED are essentially the same. No matter which version you've purchased in the past, you can keep that version and upgrade in-app. We've left all three versions in the App Store so that you do not lose any purchases you've made in the past. However, in order to better reflect the differences in each edition, we've renamed them.

Previous Name New Name Description
